Math Reflection

The author reflects on the mathematical knowledge needed to teach elementary school, including reading, writing, and comparing numbers, as well as multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions. The author feels well prepared in topics like fractions and multi-digit operations but less prepared in geometry and place value. Samples the author will include are reaction papers on math articles, a PowerPoint presenting research data, and a math journal. These samples will demonstrate how their courses helped them understand how students learn best and can find math enjoyable.

Reflection

The knowledge that I am to know in order to teach mathematics in an
elementary classroom would be read, write, and compare numbers based on the
meaning of the digits in each place. I need to have the knowledge of Multiplication
and division of whole numbers and fractions. Not only am I expected to know the
content, but understand that the standards stress conceptual understanding,
procedural skill and fluency, and application. I have to enthusiastic, encouraging,
and teach students the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need for
college, career, and civic life.

I feel well prepared with fractions equivalences and using visual models.
Moreover, I feel well prepared with multi-digit multiplication and dividing to find
the amount with multi-digit dividends and understanding of fractions, addition and
subtraction of fractions, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers. I feel less
prepared with geometric figures based on their properties and numbers based on
the meaning of the digits in each place.

The work samples that I plan on sharing in this area for my portfolio are
some reaction essays that I wrote based on some math news articles and a
PowerPoint with a hypothesis and data based on a research done on teenagers and
adults drinking. A third work sample is a journal I wrote about a math situation.

The work samples will demonstrate how these three math classes: Math 107,
207, and 131 have helped me gain knowledge of how students can learn best and be
encouraged in learning math. Writing a reaction paper based on math news articles
and journals based on math situations helped me analyze how math is fun and how
students can get easily discouraged and be afraid to think outside the box. These
work samples demonstrate how I can help my future students learn best and see
math as being fun. The PowerPoint will demonstrate how students can conduct
research based on real life experiences.
