Tutorial 1 AM1100

This is the first tutorial given in AM1100 (Basic Applied Mechanics) course in IIT Madras. This is without a solution, I will be uploading a solution to this soon...

Force systems, Free Body Diagrams and Equilibrium of Rigid Bodies

In an assembly operation of a wheel, five nuts are tightened simultaneously by the same torque M
as shown in Fig. 1(a). Calculate the net moment M0 acting on the wheel.
Determine the resultant of the distributed force shown along the length CD of the beam shown in
Fig. 1(b). Translate this resultant force and also the forces acting at points B and E to F.

2.

Draw the complete free body diagrams for the cases chown in Fig. 2 assuming all surfaces to be
smooth. (a). Member AB
(b) (i) Overall system (ii) Member ABC (iii) Member DCE (c)
(i) System ABCDE (ii) Member ABC (iii) Member CDE.

3.

A bar with two right angle

bends shown in Fig. 4 supports
a force F given as F = 10i + 3j
+100k N. If the bar has a weight
of 10 N/m, what is the
supporting force system at A?

4.

Three guy wires are used in the

support system for a television
transmission tower that is 600 m tall.
Wires A and B are tightened to a
tension of 60 kN, whereas wire C has
only 30 kN of tension. What is the
moment of the wire forces about the
base of the tower? The y axis is
collinear with AO.

5.

A transport jet plane shown in Fig.5 has a weight without fuel of 220 kN. If one wing is loaded with
50 kN fuel, what are the forces in each of the three landing gears?

6.

It is desired to lift the wheelbarrow shown in Fig.6 with one hand at the handle A by applying at A a
vertical force F and a twisting moment M about the axis of the handle. Estimate the magnitudes of
F and M.

7.

Figure 7 shows a crimping tool. This is used to crimp (make curly/wavy) terminals onto electrical
wires. When a force of 140 N is applied at the end of the handle, find out the magnitude of the
crimping forces which will be exerted on the terminal. Make appropriate idealisations to solve the
problem.

Fig. 7
Assume that frictionless,
smooth, identical logs are
piled in a box truck (sides
perpendicular
to
the
bottom). The truck is
forced off the highway and
comes to rest on an even
keel lengthwise but with
the bed at an angle with
the horizontal as shown.
As the truck is unloaded,
what is the least angle for
so that when the fourth
log is removed the three
remaining logs stay where
they are?
