Sensor Data: LLS RLS

This document contains the questions and information for an instrumentation and control exam given on April 3, 2010 at Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani. It includes 4 questions assessing different topics: 1) the differences between proportional and on-off controllers, 2) which single mode controller cannot be used alone, 3) describing a pneumatic controller with proportional-plus-integral action, and 4) developing a ladder logic diagram to control a motor's alternating clockwise and counterclockwise rotation via limit switches.

Course Title
: INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL
Nature of Exam
: Open Book
Weightage
: 60%
No. of Pages
=1
Duration

Q.1 (a). How is proportional controller different from on-off controller?
[5]
Q.1 (b). Which is the single mode controller that cannot be used alone and why?
[5]
Q.1 (c). Describe a pneumatic controller with proportional-plus-integral action. Explain clearly

how these control actions are generated in this controller.

Q.2. A temperature measurement system consists of linear elements and has an overall steadystate sensitivity of unity. The dynamics of the system are determined by the first order
transfer function of the sensing element. At time t = 0, the sensing element is suddenly
transferred from air at 20C to boiling water. One minute later the element is suddenly
transferred back to air. Using the data given below, calculate the system dynamic error at
the following times:
[15]
t = 10, 20, 50, 120 and 300 s.
Sensor data
Mass = 5 x 102 kg,
Surface area = 103 m2
Specific Heat = 0.2 J kg1 C1
Heat transfer coefficient for air = 0.2 W m2 C1
Heat transfer coefficient for water = 1.0 W m2 C1
Q.3. Explain the following with the help of suitable diagrams:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
(e)

[3 x 5 = 15]

Difference amplifier
Solid-state relay
Stepper Motor
Spool valve
Hydraulic servo system

Q.4. When the system of Fig.Q.4 is turned ON; the motor is to alternate rotation CW and CCW
cycling as the shaft extension contacts the two limit switches, RLS and LLS. Specify your
assumptions for the selection of NO and NC switches and push buttons. Develop physical
ladder diagram to solve the problem.
