Engr 240 - Dynamics Sample Test 1

1. A parachutists acceleration, a , is given by the equation, a = g

k
v , where v is its velocity, m is its
m

mass, and k is a constant. If the parachutist starts from rest at t=0, find (a) its velocity as a function of time,
(b) its terminal velocity (maximum velocity). Ans:

v=

2. Particle A starts from rest at position A and increases its speed at a constant rate of 1 m/s2 along the
circular track shown. Particle B moves along a straight path with a constant velocity of 8 m/s.
Determine
a. the velocity and acceleration of particle A when it reaches position A.
b. the relative velocity and relative acceleration of B with respect to A when particle A reaches position

A. v B / A = 4.0i + 1.0 j ; a B / A = 3.142i + 1.0 j

3. The rod rotates with a constant clockwise angular velocity of 2 rad/s. Collar C slides along the rod
such that &r& is constant at 2 m/s2. Knowing that the collar is at rest relative to the bar when r = 2 m,
determine the magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of C when r = 3 m.
4. Accounting the variation of gravitational acceleration with altitude, the acceleration is given by the formula

a = g o R 2 /( R + y ) 2 , where g o is the gravitational constant at sea level,

R is the radius of the earth, and y is the altitude. Derive an equation for the velocity of a particle in terms
of its altitude, assuming that the particle is released from rest at altitude y o . v = R

2 g o ( yo y)
.
( R + y )( R + y o )

5. A projectile is fired at an angle of 30 with an initial velocity of 20 m/s. Assuming that it was fired 4 m above
the ground level, find:
a. The horizontal distance traveled by the projectile,
b. The maximum height of the projectile,
c. The speed of the projectile, and the radius of curvature of its path at its maximum height.
6. As the driver of an automobile travels north at 20 km/h in a parking lot, he observes a truck approaching
from the northwest. After he reduces his speed to 12 km/h and turns so that he is traveling in a north-west
direction, the truck appears to be approaching from the west. Assuming that the velocity of the truck is
constant, determine the magnitude and direction of the velocity of the truck.
Answer: 14.304 km/h, 36.4
