Silt Test PDF

This document appears to be an experiment report for determining the silt content of sand to be used in concrete. It provides background on the silt test, including that clay and silt content should not exceed 15% for crushed sand or 3% for regular sand. It outlines the process of mixing sand with a saline solution and measuring the separated layers of sand and silt after settling. The percentage of silt is then calculated using the measured heights. Questions are also provided about effects of impurities, the purpose of the saline solution, and diagramming the test setup.

TITLE

SILT TEST

OBJECTIVE

This experiment is to determined the content percentage of clay and

silt in the sand not more than the specified limit.

THEORY
:
It is based on the fact that large heavy particle will settle rapidly in
water while small light particle will settle most slowly. This test is only fit for normal sand and
crushed normal sand. According to BS 882:1965, the clay and silt content should not be more than:

15% of the total weight for crushed sand

3 % of the total weight for sand

1% of the total weight for aggregate

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

1. 250ml Measuring Cylinder

(glass)

2. 500ml Measuring Cylinder

(plastic)

3. Stirring Rod

MATERIAL
1. Fine aggregate (sand)
2. Fine Salt (2.5 gram equivalent to a pinch of salt)

WORKING METHOD
1. To prepare saline solution, take 2.5 gram fine salt and dissolve it into 250ml of water (use plastic
cylinder) @ teaspoon fine salt into litre of water.
2. Add 50ml of saline solution into the 250ml measuring cylinder (glass).
3. Then add sand into the same cylinder till the water level in the cylinder reached to the 100ml
reading level.
4. Then add saline solution into the same cylinder until the total volume in the measuring cylinder
reach the 150ml level.
5. Hold the measuring cylinder and cover the measuring cylinder. Shake it for a while.
6. Place the cylinder on a table or a flat surface.
7. Allow it to stand over the same place in a stable way for a period of 3 hour.
8. As the density of clay and silt is smaller than sand, clay and silt will settle above the sand.
9. Measure the silt and the clay layers.

RESULTS
Height of Sand

= ______

Height of Clay and Silt

= ______

To calculate the content percentage of clay and silt, use the following formula:
Content % of Clay & Silt = (Height of Clay and Silt/ Height of Sand) x 100%
= _____ %

QUESTION
1. What will happen to the strength of the concrete if impurities such as clay and silt occur in the
sand?

2. Why is saline solution used in this test?

3. Sketch the apparatus used in this test.
