LSMW Is An R/3 Based Tool Which Facilitates Transfer of Data From non-SAP

The document discusses the Large Scale Migration Workbench (LSMW), a tool in SAP R/3 that facilitates transferring data from non-SAP systems into SAP format. It can import data via batch input, direct input, BAPIs, or IDs. LSMW provides recording functions to create import programs, maintains data quality and consistency, and its mappings and rules can be reused. It reduces the time and expenses of data migration compared to manual processes. The document outlines the 10 steps for an LSMW project including defining source structures, field mappings, files, and importing the converted data.

Questions
LSMW is an R/3 based tool which facilitates transfer of data from non-SAP
system to SAP system.
The tool supports conversion of legacy data into SAP format.
The data can be imported into SAP system via
Batch input
Direct input
BAPIs
Idocs
Provides a recording function that allows creating your own import program/ data
migration object.
Most of the functions should reside in the SAP system.
The quality and consistency of the data imported into the SAP system should be
more important than speed and performance of data migration.
Reusability Mappings and Rules developed should be reusable.
Existing ABAP knowledge and coding can be used
Data migration is performed at the end of SAP implementations once the SAP
system is installed and application customizing is finished.
An examination of R/3 implementation projects by SAP Consulting has shown
that data migration is about 20% of the total implementation expenses. This
portion may rise up to 40% in smaller implementation projects.
A significant reduction of the expenses for data migration results in a
corresponding significant reduction of the total project budget and the project
runtime.
The first experiences with the LSM Workbench in R/3 implementation projects
are very promising: Both the expenses and the costs of data migration could be
reduced significantly

LSMW is a part of the SAP system and thus independent of individual platforms.
Access to all SAP data and ABAP tool set.
Automatic generation of program used to read legacy data.
Automatic generation of conversion program for specified rules / mapping.
Reusability of developed components across multiple projects.
Data consistency due to standard import techniques.
Creation of data migration objects on basis of recorded transactions
: Starting the LSMW.
: Define object attributes.
: Define Source Structures.
: Define Source Fields.
: Define Structure Relationships.

Step 6 : Define Field Mapping and Conversion Rules.

Step 7 : Specify Files.
Step 8 : Read Data.
Step 9 : Convert Data.
Step 10 : Import Data.

Use Transaction Code LSMW.

Create a project and its related Subproject and Object.
Specify a name and description for each.

In this step you specify the object and the import method.
