Example 3: How Much Kmno Solution: One Mole of Kmno

To make 100mL of a 0.01M KMnO4 solution, one must: 1) Calculate the moles of solute needed as 0.001 moles from the concentration and volume. 2) Determine that 0.001 moles of KMnO4 is equivalent to 1.5803 grams based on its molar mass. 3) Weigh out 1.5803 grams of KMnO4 and dilute it with water to a total volume of 100mL.

Example 3: How much KMnO4 would I need to make 100mL of

0.01M solution?
Solution: One mole of KMnO4 contains:
1 mole of K
1 mole of Mn
4 mole of O.
1 mole of potassium is

39.1g

1 mole of manganese is

54.9g

1 mole of oxygen is

16g, so

4 mole is

1 mole of KMnO4 is

64.0g
142.0g

We want mass, so first must find moles, n.

C = n/V becomes n = CV = 0.01mol L-1 0.1L = 0.001mol.

weigh out 1.5803g of KMnO4 and dilute with water to 1000ml with water in a volumetric flask. This will
give a 0.01M solution
