Assignment 1

This document outlines an assignment for a chemical engineering thermodynamics course involving 4 multi-part questions analyzing vapor-liquid equilibrium using Raoult's law and other thermodynamic models. Question 1 involves determining temperature and pressure for a vapor-liquid separator using equilibrium compositions and activity coefficient models. Question 2 analyzes equilibrium conditions for an acetone/acetonitrile system at given pressures and compositions. Question 3 requires constructing a temperature-composition diagram for an ethanol/toluene system at 70 kPa and determining various equilibrium points. Question 4 analyzes a flash separator for a chlorobenzene/chlorobutane stream using given flow rates and temperature to determine pressure and exit compositions. The assignment is due on October 23rd

ASSIGNMENT 1
Group assignment 3 or 4 person per group

1. A process stream contains light species 1 and heavy species 2. A relatively pure liquid stream
containing mostly species 2 is desired, obtained by a single-stage liquid/vapor separation. The
equilibrium compositions are x1 = 0.001 and y1 = 0.980. Determine T(K) and P(bar) for the
separator. Assume that modified Raoults law applies. Use data given below. The calculated P
should validate this assumption.
For the liquid phase,

ln 1 0.95x 22

ln 2 0.95x 12

ln Pi sat bar Ai

Bi
T K

A1 10.08, B1 2572, A2 11.63, B2 6254

2. A binary system acetone(1)/ acetonitrile(2) consists of liquid and vapor in equilibrium. The liquid
mixture of this system to a good approximation,

ln 1 Ax22

ln 2 Ax12 where A 2.573 0.00126T

a) Determine the temperature and vapor phase compositions that is in equilibrium with liquid
containing 40 mole% acetone at pressure of 100 kPa.
b) Determine the temperature and liquid phase compositions that is in equilibrium with vapor
containing 60 mole% acetonitrile at pressure of 100 kPa.
(Show calculation in details. Calculate pressure and temperature to one decimal place; A, , i
and mole fraction to three decimal places).
3. Assuming Raoults law to be valid, prepare a T-x1-y1 diagram for a pressure of 70 kPa for
ethanol(1)/toluene(2).
(Show a sample of calculation for saturation pressure, liquid and vapor phase composition at any
temperature).
Determine the following points from the diagram and show their values:
a) Temperature and vapor phase composition of ethanol that is in equilibrium with liquid
containing 52 mole % toluene at 70kPa.
b) Temperature and liquid phase composition of toluene that is in equilibrium with vapor
containing 66 mole % ethanol at 70 kPa.
c) Liquid and vapor phase composition of ethanol that is in equilibrium at temperature 348 K
and pressure 70kPa.
4. A stream containing chlorobenzene(1) and 1-chlorobutane(2) with flowrate 50 mol/s and 150
mol/s each, is fed to a flash separator operating at 325 K. The liquid produced at the exit stream
is 80 mol/s. By assuming Raoults law,
a) Determine the pressure of this separator. [Range of pressure: 24 to 27 kPa)
b) Determine the vapor and liquid phase composition at the exit stream.
