The Topic Guide

Oct 24 Updates no new updates this past week
I am creating a document that has the rules and

updates for each member. This will be posted to

our website.

Core Values
We are a team.
We do the work to find solutions with guidance from

our Coaches and Mentors.

We know our Coaches and Mentors dont have all the
answers; we learn together.
We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
What we discover is more important than what we
win.
We share our experiences with others.
We display Gracious Professionalism and
Coopertition in everything we do.
We have fun

From our last class

Steven, Andrew, Chris & Matthew worked on the

following:
Corrections to Thing #2 (not tracking straight) have

been completed
Color Sensor!! We found that the color sensor was
more accurate with our current design. We
experimented with applying the color sensor to 2
missions and based on the board layout, decided
that the color sensor would work best if installed on
the RIGHT hand side
Discussing how people learn, we watched a TED

talk video and held a brainstorming session on

teaching technique to assist with Distracted

Some Programming Reminders:

Both partners should be writing their own programs

and testing different ways to solve the mission.

Save your programs under your own profile.
Program name should end with your initials. Door
CL
Program name should be relatively short and reflect
the mission
Consider executing a mission with a power setting of
50%-75%
If the return to base leg of the mission is relatively
simple, consider increasing the speed to 75%-100%
WORK TOGETHER! Several missions are quite

Tonights Plan:
We will spend some time talking about the Research

Project.
Continue to work on our missions started in the
previous class: Engagement, Reverse Engineering
and Remote Communications
We will practice running these 3 programs back to
back tonight
Testing with the Color Sensor compared to the Light
Sensor
Discussing competition judging and scoring
Make sure that the Color Sensor has been installed
on the RIGHT side of both robots and connected to

Color Sensor VS Light Sensor

Light Sensor (NXT 1.0)
Measures the Amount of light detected
Ambient light (light in the room)
Reflected light (light reflected from the built in LED)

Color Sensor (NXT 2.0 and EV3)

Performs the same functions as the light sensor

described above
In Color Sensor mode the sensor can detect 6
different colors: Black, White, Blue, Green, Yellow
and Red
The third functionality of this device is Lamp Mode,
where it functions as a basic light, optionally Red,

Judging
We will be judged in 3 different areas:
Core Values
Project Work
Robot Design

All judging will follow rubrics

Robot Competition scoring will be handled

separately
