Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 4. USING DEVELOPMENTALLY EFFECTIVE APPROACHES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that teaching and learning with young
children is a complex enterprise, and its details vary depending on childrens ages, characteristics, and the
settings within which teaching and learning occur. They understand and use positive relationships and
supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children and families. Candidates know,
understand, and use a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional strategies, and
tools to connect with children and families and positively influence each childs development and learning.
(NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the spring semester of 2014 during my ECED 235-Preschool Practicum course I worked with my
mentor to change a center, and make it over into a new and exciting learning area for children. I chose a farm
theme to correspond with our lesson plans for the week and our trip to farm days, which the families were
also invited to attend. I removed the computer and the current items from the writing center. In place of the
computer I added a barn and animals. In addition, in the writing center, I added books about farms, in both
English and Spanish, sorting, matching, and counting activities, markers, crayons and pencils.
Analysis of What I Learned:
By making over this center I learned teaching and learning is a complex enterprise. When planning and
designing this center I looked to the Reggio Approach for inspiration. I focused on tools that would enhance
learning for every child. In addition, I focused on how to meet the needs of a variety of ages of and
characteristics.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competence on this standard by showing I understand how settings
influence teaching and learning. By providing a new center, with a wide variety of activities, I know how to
use developmentally appropriate approaches and instructional strategies to promote learning and
development for every child.
