CE 3155 - Structural Analysis (Part 2) Tutorial 1

This document provides a tutorial on structural analysis with three problems. The first problem asks to determine forces in each member of a structure given cross-sectional area and modulus of elasticity. The second problem asks to find the force in a specific member. The third problem asks to find the vertical displacement at a joint and support reactions for another structure, assuming constant axial rigidity. Solutions are provided using structural stiffness matrices.

CE 3155 Structural Analysis (part 2)

Tutorial 1

1) Determine the force in each member of the assembly shown in the figure. Take
A = 300mm
2
and E = 200 GPa for each member.

2) Determine the force in member 5. Take A = 0.0015m
2
and E = 200 GPa for
each member.

3) Determine the vertical displacement at joint 2 and the support reactions.
Assume AE is constant.

Answers:
1) Structure stiffness matrix

q1 = -16.7 kN , q2 = 0 kN , q3 = 16.7 kN

2) Structure stiffness matrix

Force in member 5 = 33.3KN

3) For member 1,

Structure stiffness matrix

D1 = 6.75x10
3
/ (AE) , D2 = -29.3x10
3
/ (AE) , D3 = 4.25x10
3
/ (AE)

Q4 = 3.18 kN , Q5 = -2.25 kN , Q6 = 0.75 kN
