Api 610

API 610 is a standard published by the American Petroleum Institute that covers requirements for centrifugal pumps used in the petroleum, chemical, and gas industries. It aims to ensure pump safety and reliability to minimize risks like catastrophic failures that could endanger lives or cost millions per day in lost production. Facilities in industries like offshore oil platforms, oil fields, refineries, and gas plants typically specify compliance with API 610 when purchasing pumps.

API 610: What's It All About?1. General1.

1 IntroductionAPI 610 has been written to ensure

safe and reliable pumps are used in a dangerous industry. Below we have summarised the major
features and requirements of
API610. This paper has been written to provide you with an overview. You shouldnot rely on this
paper for your full knowledge of API 610 nor to make a decisionas to whether you use, or do not
use the API 610 standard. We recommend that you read and understand the standard before
deciding whether to, or how to, applyit to your application.
1.2 Scope
API 610 is a standard that covers the minimum requirements for centrifugal pumpsfor use in
petroleum, heavy duty chemical and gas industry services. It includes pumps running in reverse as
hydraulic power recovery turbines.
1.3 Why is API 610 Published?API 610 has been written to ensure a minimum standard for: Safety:
Safety isof prime importance in the petroleum industry. A cracked pump casing, failed bearing or
leaking mechanical seal can lead to a major catastrophe.
Reliability: After safety, production is of prime importance in the petroleumindustry. If production
stops, it can cost millions of dollars
per day.Maintainability: If a pump is removed for an overhaul, it must be back in service as quickly
as possible to ensure safety back up and no loss of production.
1.4 Who Publishes API 610?The API standards are published by the American Petroleum Institute.
1.5 Who Uses API 610?Owners and operators of the following facilities typically specify API 610
whenpurchasing all of their pumps:Offshore Oil PlatformsOnshore Oil FieldsOil Processing
