CLASSIFIERS
Classifiers
Classifiers are a special type of sign.
They dont mean anything by
themselves.
Themselves, mean nothing
Regular signs mean WHAT.
Classifiers mean HOW / WHERE
There are different kinds of classifiers.
Classifiers, different, different,
different
Classifiers
Classifiers separates non-fluent
signers from fluent ASL signers.
ASL unskilled, ASL fluent. Separate,
what? Classifiers.
Classifiers gives a lot more information
in less time - less is more!
Classifiers offer thick info - less time
Classifiers
Seven different classifiers:
- DCL (Descriptive Classifiers)
- ICL (Instrument Classifiers)
- LCL (Locative Classifiers)
Classifiers
Seven different classifiers:
- BCL (Body Classifiers)
- BPCL (Body Part Classifier)
- PCL (Plural Classifier)
- ECL (Element Classifier
Descriptive Classifiers
(DCL)
Descriptive classifiers are handshapes
that describe size and shapes of objects.
DCL:bent B "extremely tall" DCL:4 claw "curly hair"
DCL:bent-B "short" DCL:G "thin"
DCL:4 "long hair" DCL:4 (claw) "freckles"
DCL:1 "bulletin board" DCL:4 "striped"
DCL:1 "black board"
Instrument Classifiers
(ICL)
Instrument Classifiers show how a person
handles or manipulates an object.

ICL "driving" ICL "hammer in a nail"

ICL "light match ICL (broom) ICL "sweep"

Locative Classifiers
(LCL)
Locative Classifiers tell the location of an
object, and/or its movement.
LCL:C/LCL:B "place cup on napkin"
LCL:5 "leaf floating to the ground"
LCL:1 (sticks) "one here-one here"
LCL:B "shelf" (over to the right)
LCL:1 "goal-posts"

Body Classifiers
(BCL)
Body Classifiers show how a person
moves his/her body parts. You use your
body to "act out" or "role play." You show
the action (or interaction) that is going on.
"yawn"
"acting tough"
"give hug to child"
"running hard/pumping arms"
"wave to crowd"
"listen for strange noise"
Body Part Classifiers
(BPCL)
Body Part Classifiers represent specific
parts of the body
Facial expressions are used to
emphasize how the person does it, like
they ran easily, in panic, etc.

BPCL "kick back" (relax) BPCL:L "red face" shy
BPCL "cross legs" BPCL:flat-C "big grin"

Plural Classifiers
(PCL)
Plural classifiers indicate a specific number
or a non-specific number.
PCL:2 "two people walking"
PCL:4 "long line of people"
PCL:4 "people moving in line"
PCL: 5 "hordes of _____." Often called "scads of."
PCL:V "people seated in a circle"
Element Classifiers
(ECL)
Usually associated with the elements of
the earth. Describes weather or other
natural phenomena.
ECL:5 - Fire, wind, water (river/ocean,etc.),
light, storm, rain, waterfall, floor shaking
ECL:1 - Lightning, water dripping, hail,
snowflakes, ash
Category Overlapping
NOTE:
A classifier sign can be a combination
of more than one category.
Group Activity
Get into groups of four.
Create a list of five (5) classifiers
for each category given to you.
NOTE: Use different examples
than the one on the sheet.
Group Activity
Have one member write your list
on the board.
Present your list to the class.
Class: Discuss whether you
agree/disagree
