This document is an engineering mechanics tutorial for first year environmental engineering and MISE students at Ardhi University. It contains 5 practice problems involving vector components and vector addition of forces. Students are asked to determine the x and y components of a 500 N force, express a 5.2 kN force as a vector given its slope, find the resultant of two combined forces using the parallelogram rule and summing components, find the resultant of two forces applied to a bracket by writing it in terms of unit vectors, and determine the forces in two directions that equivalent to replacing a 600 N force applied to a bracket.

EE 117: ENGINEERING MECHANICS I TUTORIAL NO. 1 FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND MISE,
1. The line of action of a 500 N force runs through the points A and B as shown in the figure, determine x and y scalar components of F.
2. The slope of the 5.2 kN force F is specified as shown in the figure. Express F as a vector.
3. Determine the resultant R of the two forces shown by (a) by applying the parallelogram rule for vector addition (b) by summing scalar components
4. Determine the resultant R of the two forces applied to the bracket. Write R in the terms of unit vectors along x and y
5. The 600 N force applied to the bracket at A is to be replaced by two forces F a in the-a direction and F b in the b-b direction, which together produce the same effect on the bracket as that of the 600 N force. Determine F a and F b .
