Eugene Ormandy Conducts Shostakovich

Philadelphia Premiere of the Symphony No. 10

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93
Philadelphia Orchestra
EUGENE ORMANDY, conductor
Recorded in the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, PA
on 05 April 1968
We don't normally think of Eugene Ormandy when we think of Shostakovich but the conductor
actually performed and championed a number of his works. He recorded the symphonies 1, 4, 5,
6, 10, 13, 14 & 15 but his collection of scores contains virtually all the symphonies with the
seeming exception of the Eleventh.
Here is the first performance in Philadelphia of the 10th, which was completed in 1953. It is
extremely well-played by the Philly band and the audience was very appreciative of both the work
and the execution. Ormandy was to go into the studio and record the Tenth (10 April, I believe) but
this recording has an electricity about it not quite captured in the commercial release.
After some considerable work by the Gnome, the problematic tape came out sounding pretty good
and William Smith's commentary is included.
Don't forget, you can hear Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra give the American
Premiere of the SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY NO. 4 right here on MetroGnome.
