What is a Labor Union?
An organized association of workers formed to protect and further their rights and interests. What is collective bargaining? What did they bargain for? Negotiations between workers and their employers Higher pay, shorter hours, and better working conditions Why were the unions of skilled workers important? Their special skills gave them extra bargaining power. Management would have trouble replacing skilled workers. What is a Strike? The refusal to work by employees upset with their working conditions Describe the British Governments reaction to unions They denied the right to form unions Governments saw unions as a threat to social order and stability Who is the AFL? The American Federation of Labor. A collection of several unions formed together for greater bargaining power. List 3 reform laws in Great Britain and what they accomplished. Factory Act of 1833: Factories could not hire children under 9 years old. Children 9-12 could work no more than 8 hours per day. Mines Act of 1842: Prevented Women and Children from working underground Ten Hours Act of 1847: Limited the work day in factories of women and children to 10 hours Who was the National Child Labor Committee and what did they do? An organization set up by U.S. reformers to end all child labor. They argued that child labor lowered wages for all workers.
