Power System Fundamentals: The Course Overview

The document outlines a power system fundamentals course consisting of 5 modules covering topics such as electric power system introduction, modeling, steady-state analysis, optimal operation, and dynamics, protection and control. The course objectives are to provide an overview for non-engineering professionals in module 1, and give background knowledge to power engineering professionals in subsequent modules to facilitate understanding of specialized power system courses. The overall objective is to prepare attendees through practical explanations that reduce anxiety around technical mathematics concepts.

POWER SYSTEM

FUNDAMENTALS
The course overview
1. Module 1: Introduction to electric power systems.
2. Module 2: Power system modeling.
3. Module 3: Steady-state of power systems and static analyses.
4. Module 4: Introduction to optimal operation of power systems.
5. Module 5: Introduction to power system dynamics, protection,
and control.
The course objectives (1)
Module 1 is intended to both engineering and non-engineering
professionals, working in the field of electric power systems,
with the objective to give an overview of power system structure,
operation and problems at appropriate level.
Next modules are intended to power engineering professionals
and objectives are to give a background just at the level that
attendees can follow modules concerned with power system
modeling, steady-state, optimal operation, and dynamics,
protection and control of power systems.
The course objectives (2)
The overall objective is to prepare attendees for easier
following of specialized courses in different areas of power
system engineering at appropriate level but some mathematics
cannot be avoided.
Although the mathematics presented might look at first glance
rather heavy, one of the course objectives is to free everyone
from the fear of mathematics and to simply explain how from
the basic laws one can end up and understand just apparently
heavy concepts behind power system engineering problems.
