This document provides instructions for four compass survey tutorials:
1) Find stations affected by local attraction and calculate correct bearings using observed bearings in a closed traverse.
2) Calculate bearings of lines BC and CD given measured clockwise angles ABC and BCD with line AB as the meridian.
3) Determine included angles and angular error given bearings of lines in a closed traverse.
4) Calculate bearings and distances of ships A, C with respect to ship B after 1 hour given initial bearings and speeds.

Tutorial: Compass surveys
1. The following bearing are taken in running a closed compass traverse
Line Observed FB Observed BB AB 48 0 25 230 0 00 BC 177 0 45 356 0 00 CD 104 0 15 284 0 55 DE 165 0 15 345 0 15 EA 259 0 30 79 0 00
(a) Find out as to which stations are affected by local attraction and how much? (b) Determine the correct bearings. (c) Calculate the true bearings if the declination was 1 0 30 W.
2. A, B, C and D are four stations. At station B, the angle ABC is measured clockwise and was found to be 196 0 53. On setting up at C, the angle BCD also measured clockwise, is observed to be 142 0 17. If AB is adopted as the meridian, what are the bearings of BC and CD?
3. The bearings of the lines of a closed traverse are 290 0 30, 250 0 30, 196 0 00, 175 0 30, 112 0
00 and 30 0 00. Determine the included angles and the angular error.
4. Three ship A, B and C start sailing from Mumbai port at the same time in three directions. The speed of all the three ships are same i.e. 30 km/hr. Their bearings were measured to be N70 0 E, S60 0 E and S10 0 E for ship A, B and C respectively. After an hour, the captain of ship B determines the bearings of the two ships with respect to his own ship and found their distances. Calculate the bearings and distances of each ship with respect to ship B.
