PP and PTFE

Cai Xingfang
Polypropylene, PP
Invented in 1955 by F.J. Natta by addition
reaction of propylene gas with a sterospecific
catalyst titanium trichloride.
Highly versatile polymers
Plastic, eg. dishwasher-safe food containers
Fibre, eg. indoor-outdoor carpeting
Annual worldwide production: 52m tonnes

Molecular structure, PP

Properties, PP
Low density (weight savings)
Semi-rigid and translucent
High melting point (160C)
Chemical inertness
High stiffness
Heat resistance
Stretchability (film and fibre applications)
Integral hinge property

Applications, PP

Polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE
Common trade name: Teflon
Discovered in 1938 by Roy Plunkett at DuPont
Most famous use: non-stick cookware
First use of Teflon: in making atomic bombs!
Annual worldwide production: 50,000 tonnes
Molecular structure, PTFE

Properties, PTFE
Remarkably resistant to strong acids, alkalis
Insoluble in solvents
Tolerant to extremes of temperature (-240C
to 250C); heated beyond 500C without
burning
Excellent lubricant features due to very low
coefficient of friction (~ 0.1)

Applications, PTFE
Non-stick cookware
Bearings, bushings, gears, slide plates
Stain resistant treatment for carpets & fabrics
