Viscosity Experiment

1. The document describes an experiment to determine the viscosity of a liquid by measuring the terminal velocities of ball bearings of different diameters as they fall through the liquid. 2. A light gate and data logger are used to measure the time taken for ball bearings to fall between two points in a glass tube filled with the liquid, from which terminal velocity is calculated. 3. Repeating the process for balls of different diameters and plotting terminal velocity versus the square of the radius allows the viscosity to be calculated from the slope of the resulting line.

Step 1. Put the liquid in the long glass tube and mark two points as shown in the figure.

Place the
light gates at these points to measure the time difference between these two points.
Step 2. Data logger attached with the light gates can measure the speed of the ball at these two
points , which is the terminal speed of the ball bearing
Step3. Repeat the process by taking balls of different diameters and find their terminal velocities.
The diameter of the ball bearing can be measured by micrometer.
Step4. Note down the values in the table with the column headings, V(ms
-1
), r (m) and r
2
(m
2
).
Step5. Draw the graph between 'V' and 'r
2
' which should be a straight line passing through the origin.
Step 6. The relation between the terminal velocity and the r
2
is

, which
corresponds to the equation of line y=mx+c, and the value of gradient is

.
The values of

can be taken from the standard densities table. The value of g = 9.81 ms
-2
.
By using these values and the value of the gradient, the viscosity can be calculated as
