Project 2: Rhetorical Superheroes
Assignment Sheet
Due: Thursday, Oct. 30 at 2:00 pm
First draft due: Thursday, October 16 for peer response
Second draft due: Thursday, October 23 for my written comments
This project asks you to identify a rhetorical superhero, someone who has personally
impacted or affected you through their speech or writing. As mentioned previously, stay away
from public figures, like MLK Jr., whose rhetorical skills have been analyzed countless times
before. Instead, focus on someone whom you find to be inspirational or interesting in the way
that they make their points and use rhetoric. Consider people you know (a coach, a pastor, or a
family member) or people who interest you (a songwriter, a public speaker, someone from Ted
Talks or YouTube). Think about the following: How did their command of rhetoric, whether
they knew they were commanding it or not, affect you? What are their superpowers that make
them so rhetorically special? Look again at Chapter/Issue 3 in Understanding Rhetoric and the
character of Metamorph. What are the skills that he exhibits?
Grading (30% of course grade):
The following criteria will be used to evaluate this Project:
- Direction: Does the essay respond appropriately to the assignment? Does it focus on
a specific rhetorical hero in a particular situation?
- Rhetorical analysis: Does the essay specifically explain the heros use of rhetorical
skills in terms of ethos, pathos, logos, kairos, and writers identity? Does it explain
how the writer addresses the audience and the situation/occasion?
- Development and Cohesiveness: Does the essay move from specific, important
examples of rhetorical use and explanations in a way that makes sense and covers all
important uses of rhetoric? Is the essay well-organized? Does it flow logically
without jumping around from point to point in ways that do not seem connected?
Does the essay maintain focus on examples that are specific to the superheros use of
rhetoric without getting off-track?
- Cover Letter: Does reflective letter discuss course outcomes in terms of the work
done for this project? Is there a thorough discussion of the writers process when
working on this project and how he/she has grown as a writer during Project 2?
- Care: Has appropriate care been taken to meet MLA formatting standards and remove
errors of conventions (grammar, syntax) in the final copy of the paper?
- I nvention Portfolio: Are all components included? Is the work organized based upon
the Table of Contents?
- Participation: Was the student present both physically and mentally in each class?
Did the students participation in class reflect an obvious completion of homework
readings and writings?

Project 2
Guidelines:
- 6-7 pages in length
- You must include a Works Cited page that cites the specific work you evaluated and
were you found it. See me for help with this.
- MLA formatting: Times New Roman, 12 point font; double spaced; your name,
instructors name, course, and date in upper-left corner of first page; pagination with
your name in upper-right corner of every page except first; no cover page.
- You must include a title (NOT Rhetorical Superhero) centered on the first page.
- Essay will be placed in a one-inch binder (Invention Portfolio) that will include ALL
work done in class toward this Project 2 only (do not include Project 1 with this).
This will include all drafts and peer response sheets, brainstorming lists, quick-writes,
homework reflections, drawings, and any work done in class. You will be provided
with a checklist closer to the due date.
- The Invention Portfolio must begin with a typed Table of Contents listing all of the
work collected in the portfolio.
- After the Table of Contents, you must include a Cover Letter reflecting on your work
for the project and how your work met the Course Outcomes (from the syllabus or
sticky-noted page in Understanding Rhetoric).
