01 Understand Raster Graphic Images Vocabulary
Color Depth The number of colors per pixel that can be contained in an image. Compression How an image is saved in order to reduce the file size Lossless Compression Reduces the file size without losing any pixel data Lossy Compression Alters and/or eliminates some data that is considered unnecessary Portability How easily and quickly you can open, modify, and view the files on computers using different operating systems, software, and browsers Transparency Allows the background color of an image to be "eliminated" so that the background on the page can be seen Raster Graphics Images composed of grids of pixels that have a fixed resolution (number of pixels per inch) and cannot be resized without losing image quality. Also referred to as bitmaps. Edited in paint programs. Vector Graphics Composed of mathematical formulas that define lines, shapes and curves that can be layered and combined to create images. Shapes can be edited by moving points called nodes. Edited in draw programs. Can be 2D or 3D. Meta Graphics Graphic that can contain both vector and raster data. GIF Raster graphic; standard format on web for animation; supports transparency; lossless compression; supports 256 colors; used for clip art, cartoon images, and animation. JPEG Raster graphic; does not support animation; lossy compression; does not support transparency; supports 16M colors; high quality; used primarily for photograph type images. BMP Raster graphic; does not support animation or transparency; uncompressed; supports 256 colors; not well suited for transferring files across the Internet or for print publications; used to create icons and wallpaper for desktop as well as editing raster images (should be saved after editing as another type of image). PNG Raster graphic; does not support animation; supports transparency; lossless compression; supports 256 colors; used to replace GIF and TIFF images, but not suited to replace JPEG images; does require special software to run on some older software. TIFF Raster graphic; does not support animation or transparency; available in compressed and un- compressed formats (compressed is advised); supports 16M colors; used as storage container for faxes and other digital images requiring high quality as well as for scanned images. AI Vector graphic that is considered industry standard; used by vector graphics developers to create, save, and archive original artwork. EPS Vector graphic that can be opened by computers running different operating systems; preferred format for vendors/clients who use the graphics in publications due to its portability.
