Objectives: Traffic Census Form Stop Watch

The document outlines an experiment to determine traffic flow rates in a particular area by counting vehicle numbers and types over a one hour period. Materials used include a traffic census form and stopwatch. Vehicles were counted every five minutes and converted to PCU (passenger car unit) values. While weather posed challenges, researchers were able to successfully collect data and convert it as outlined in the procedure.

Objectives

To determine the rate of traffic flow in a particular area to know the composition of traffic
and vehicle speed. Furthermore, to identify the capacity of the road or junction and whether
they are at the appropriate level.

Theory

Traffic flow theory is an important matter to be used in the planning, design and operation
of road and highway systems. Traffic flow can be determine by the total number of vehicles
passing one part of a road while traffic volume states total number of vehicle passing one
point along a road in particular time in vehicle per unit hour.

Materials / Equipment

Traffic census form
Stop watch

Procedure
1. A suitable site is selected nearby polytechnic Port Dickson. (the site chosen is not
dangerous and does not interfere with existing traffic).

2. The rate of traffic flow is determined at the selected area. The number of vehicles was
taken based on the type of road and the types of each vehicle every minutes. Classes for
each vehicles is every five minutes.

3. The observation was done for 1 hour.

4. The vehicles count data was converted into P.C.U (refer to Arahan Tekniik (Jalan) 8/86
Conversion Factor to P.C.U) in every 5 minutes intervals.

Conclusion

From the observation, the data that we get is more or less accurate. This is because we have
faced many problem conducting this study. Firstly, the weather condition was not good and it
was raining all the time. Moreover, we did not have a comfortable location to take the
reading. In the end, we successfully carried out the study and able to convert the date into the
given procedure.
