The study isolated 30 actinobacteria strains from soil samples in Tamil Nadu, India. 11 of these strains showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Geotrichum candidum. The isolates were screened on starch casein agar to identify 20 actinobacteria species. Secondary screening found strains A7, A8, A23, C2, F3, and F4 produced the largest inhibition zones. Crude extracts from these strains using hexane and ethyl acetate showed inhibitory activity. Thin layer chromatography of strains F3 and F4 identified compounds with Rf values of 0.82 and 0.88 respectively.

ABSTRACT: The endophytic actinomycetes can producing many antifungal compounds that can suppress growth of pathogenic fungi. A total 30 actinomycetes strains were isolated from Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Rameshwaram, Tiruchengode. They were screened for their antifungal activity. Out of the 30 strains, 11 showed antifungal activity. Actinobacteria were isolated by serial dilution and plating method on starch casein agar media. Total 20 species were isolated on the bases of colony characteristics on starch casein agar and all the isolates were primarily screened for antifungal activity of the test organisms Candida albicans and Geotrichum candidum. In secondary screening (A7,A8,A23,C2,F3,F4) showed the maximum zone of inhibition. Bioactive compound of the crude extractHexane 5:1(v/v) Ethyl acetate 1:1(v/v) are more inhibitory activity. Thin layer chromatography the solvent front with the Rf value of 0.82 for F3 strains and 0.88 for F4 strains. Keywords: Actinobacteria, Antibacterial activity, starch casein agar
