About Theseus

Grew up in Southern Greece with mom

Son of Aegus, who was king of Athens

Always eager to prove strength


His arrival

Arrived in kingdom and was renowned for his journey, not for being
prince

King and Medea planned to poison him

Revealed himself

Medea escaped
Minotaur

Was half bull half human, kept in dungeon

14 people sent in annually

Went in and killed Minotaur

Was meant to marry Ariadne and sail together

1) Seasick 2)Left her in the middle of the night


King

He kept black sail up and didnt put up white sail

Assuming Theseus was dead, king threw himself off rocky cliff

Theseus became new kind

formed only democracy in all the kingdoms

common wealth, voting, council hall, Theseus commander in chief


His Reputation

Was known for helping those in need

Went to war in Great War of Seven Thebes to insist that they bury the
dead, but didnt loot

Helped Oedipus when nobody else did

Became friends with Pirithous after he stole his cattle

Chased out centaurs after they ruined Pirithouss wedding


His Son

Had son with woman from Amazon

One time his city was invaded was by Amazon women

Son, Hippolytus, raised where Theseus grew up

Hippolytus was a good athlete and hunter

Grew close when Theseus visited with his wife Phaedra, Ariadnes

Hippolytus didnt notice women

Phaedra fell in love with Hippolytus

Determined to commit suicide

Phaedras nurse told Hippolytus

Phaedra killed herself and left suicide note leading Theseus to


believe Hippolytus had loved her

Theseus banned Hippolytus from Athens

Hippolytus was killed by water monster

Artemis appeared to Theseus and told him the truth

Theseus was able to see Hippolytuss spirit one last time


His Death

Died after being banished from Athens for unknown reason

Great tomb built for him in addition to being a sanctuary for slaves
and poor, helpless people

Now known as the protector of the defenseless
