Integer Rules
Adding Integers
Same signs (+,+) (-,-):
Add the numbers and give the answer the same sign.
ex: 3 + 8= 11 or -3 + (-8)= -11
Different signs (+,-)(-,+):
Change the problem to a subtraction problem (subtract the
lower number from the higher number).
Give the answer the same sign as the bigger number.
ex: 3 + (-8) = -5 or -3 + 8 = 5
Opposite numbers: (-2,+2) (+5,-5)
Adding opposite numbers will always give you zero.
ex: 3 + (-3)= 0 or 8 + (-8)= 0
Subtracting Integers
Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign.
Change the second number to its opposite.
Follow the rules for addition.
ex: -3 - 8= -3 + (-8)= -11 or - 8 - (-3)= -8 + 3= -5
