Genetic Algorithm Tuned Pid Controller Based Shunt Active Filter For Harmonic Reduction

This paper proposes reducing harmonics and improving power factor using a shunt active filter controlled by synchronous reference frame theory and a PID controller tuned by a genetic algorithm. The genetic algorithm optimizes the PID controller values over 100 generations. With the optimized PID values, the shunt active filter maintains a constant DC bus voltage, reducing the total harmonic distortion below IEEE standards. Simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink validate the performance of the shunt active filter with synchronous frame theory and the genetically tuned PID controller.

GENETIC ALGORITHM TUNED PID

CONTROLLER BASED SHUNT ACTIVE FILTER

FOR HARMONIC REDUCTION
ABSTRACT
This paper presents the reduction of harmonics and power factor improvement using Shunt Active Filter (SAF) controlled by
synchronous reference frame theory and Proportional I ntegral Derivative (PI D) controller tuned by Genetic Algorithm
(GA). The Synchronous Reference Frame Theory(SRFT) is used to generate the reference compensating current, PID
controller to control the DC voltage across the capacitor and Hysteresis Current Controller(HCC) for generating gating
signals for VSI based shunt active filter. The PI D controller values are optimized by using Genetic Algorithm. The Genetic
algorithm is designed for 100 generations for the better value of PI D. By the optimized values of PI D controller the DC bus
voltage across SAF is maintained constant and hence the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is reduced below the value
specified by I EEE. The results are validated by simulating the test system with and without Shunt active filter (SAF) with
synchronous frame theory and proposed PI D controller tuned by Genetic algorithm using MATLAB/SI MULI NK.
