Week 2 Assignment

Question 1

The project I am thinking about undertaking is an evaluation of the online coursework that is
currently being utilized by our school. About five years ago, our district purchased access to
online courses known as Cyber High. These courses are offered along with our traditional
courses. The purpose of the adoption was to provide access to accredited courses for students
who need credit remediation and to offer college-prep courses not currently available on our
campus. The goal was to increase the number of credits students earned each trimester and to
open additional avenues for those who wish to complete courses that are required for admission
to universities.

While I am just beginning to understand the process of evaluation, I foresee myself examining
several areas related to the program. I will need to determine the number of credits students are
earning from the program. There will also need to be an examination of the cost of this program.
I will need to interview students to determine their opinions of the coursework and whether they
feel it is leading to positive learning results. Finally, I want to look at student success rates with
courses that are specifically labeled as college-prep. The expected outcomes of this study would
be to determine if the program is having the impact on credit remediation the district hoped for
when the program was purchased as well as to determine the level of student success with
college-prep courses.

Question 2

I want to evaluate this program for several reasons. First, I am interested in determining if the
program is achieving any of the goals that were listed above as our district spends a great deal of
money for the rights to these courses. Also, I am concerned that students are not attempting the
college-prep courses. At the same time, I want to determine whether or not students are
successful in completing the college-prep courses when they are taken.

Question 3

I tend to support the ideas expressed in the first definition. I say this because I see evaluation as a
process of using data to determine efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of programs. I tend not
to see a need for using evaluation as a means to making decisions between other alternatives, as
seems to be suggested by the second definition.
