Assignment
Describe a rule for each pattern.
1) , , , ,
The arrows are rotating in a clockwise, quarter turn pattern.
2a) How are tables of values like pictorial representations?
They are both convenient ways to organize data and discover patterns.
2b) How are they different?
The tables are usually more detailed.
The pictorials are much more visual in nature.
3) A friend looks for a pattern in the table below and claims that the output equals the input
divided by 2. Is your correct and why?
Input 3 6.8 8 10 25
Output 2 3.4 4 5 12.5
The chart reveals that there is not a set pattern to the data.
While 4 of the 5 do follow a pattern , the first value in the chart does not adhere to the
pattern.
Describe each pattern using words. Draw the next likely figure in each pattern.
4)

Add one row of steps to the bottom of the expression.

5)

Add two golden bricks to the outside of the expression, building up the verticals.

Make a table with a process chart to represent each pattern. Write an expression for the
numbers of tiles or objects in the nth figure.

The graph shows the number of bottles of water needed for students going on a field trip.

10) How many bottles of water are needed if 20 students attend the field trip?
20(2) = 40 bottles
11) How many bottles of water are needed if n students attend the field trip?
n(2)
Identify a pattern and find the next three numbers.
12) 3, 6, 10, 15,
n + 3, n + 4, n + 5, next three numbers = 21, 28, 36
13) 1, 4, 3, 6, 5
+ 3, - 1, + 3, -1
14) Write the first five numbers of two different patterns in which 12 is the third term.
4, 8, 12, 16, 20
0, 6, 12, 18, 24
Think About a Plan
A moving company sells different sizes of boxes.
Box A = 12 x 16 x 12
Box B = 16 x 16 x 16
Box C = 20 x 16 x 20
15) Identify a pattern of the dimension changes.
12, 16, 20, 24
15) The extra-large box (not listed) is one size larger than Box C. What size is the extra-large
box?
24 x 16 x 24
16) What is the volume of the medium box?
The formula for finding the volume is v = l * w * h
16 * 16 * 16 = 4096 cubic inches
Collecting
Jay has a rare baseball card collection. He currently owns 10 baseball cards. Each month, he
purchases a new card for his collection.
17) Write a model to represent the number of cards in Jays collection after n months.
n + 10 where n = the number of months.
Use the figure below.

18) Find the two figures.

19) Make a table to find the number of squares in each figure.

1 1(1) 1
2 2(2) 4
3 3(3) 9
4 4(4) 16
5 5(5) 25
20) What is the number of squares in the nth figure? Explain why you came to that conclusion.
n(n)
All of these answers are square roots.
Copy and complete each table.

n ? n 4(n) + 1 4(n) + 1
Simplify
22) 3.6 + (-1.7)
3.6 + (-1.7)
3.6 - 1.7 = 1.9
23) (-3)( -9) = 27

24) -2.8 7 = -4
