Problem Set

1. A 0.3764 g sample of magnesium-aluminum alloy was dissolved in acid and precipitated with base to form Mg(OH)2 and Al2O3.xH2O, which were ignited to MgO and Al2O3 weighing 0.6850 g total. The percentages of Mg and Al in the original sample are to be calculated. 2. The document lists chemical formulas and asks to identify which would be used to calculate the gravimetric factor for determining the percentage of Co3As2O8·8H2O when precipitated in different forms. 3. A 1.200-g sample of impure ammonium aluminum sulfate was treated to

Gravimetric Calculations
1. The composition of an alloy containing only magnesium and aluminum was
determined by dissolving a 0.3764 g sample in acid, precipitating Mg(OH)2 and
Al2O3.xH2O with base, and igniting the precipitate to MgO and Al2O3, respectively.
Calculate the percentage of Mg and Al in the sample if the ignited residue weighed
0.6850 g.
2. Use chemical symbols to generate the gravimetric factor if the percentage of
Co3As2O88H2O is sought and the weighed form is:
a) As2S3 d) H2O
b) MgNH4AsO4 e) Co3O4
c) Mg2As2O7 f) CoSO4
3. The aluminum in a 1.200-g sample of impure ammonium aluminum sulfate was
precipitated with aqueous ammonia as the hydrous Al2O3 xH2O. The precipitate was
filtered and ignited at 1000C to give anhydrous Al2O3, which weighed 0.2001 g. Express
the result of this analysis in terms of
(a) % NH4Al(SO4)2.
(b) %Al2O3.
(c) %Al.
