This document contains three assignment questions for a mechanics and strength of materials course. The first question involves determining the axial load diagram and normal stress in two welded cylindrical rods with different diameters loaded by a force P. The second question involves calculating the stress in a steel channel section member AD of a loaded pin-jointed truss. The third question involves finding the points of application and average normal stress in two short cast iron members under an axial compressive force.

Mechanics and Strength of Materials I (ENGR 2076)
September 12, 2014
Assignment #1 Due: September 19, 2014
1) Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown in the figure below. The diameter of rod AB is 45mm and the diameter of rod BC is 70mm. (a) Draw the axial load diagram. (b) Determine the normal stress acting on a cross-section at the midpoint of rod AB and BC.
2) A pin-jointed truss is loaded as shown. Determine the stress in member AD, which is made from a steel channel section, C250 X 37, with a cross-section area of 4,740 mm 2 (See Appendix C).
70 mm 45 mm P = 150 kN 120 kN 120 kN 750 mm 1000 mm 3) Structural members are called axially or centrically loaded when the internal force acts perpendicular to the cross-section and passes through the centroid of the cross-section. For these conditions, no bending occurs. Two short cast iron members have the cross-sectional dimensions shown below. If an axial compressive force of 65kN is applied to each, find the points of application for the forces such that no bending occurs, and determine the value of the average normal stress in each.
