A View From The Bridge Law and Justice
Justice is very important here- everyone has different ideas of what justice is,
Alfieri reminds everyone of the law. Ironic- everyone has different ideas of what
justice is, and they all want it/think it is important but for some people eg. Eddie it
doesnt come true.
Alfieri says settle for half- this is directly talking about between Italian and
American cultures/ideal, but could also mean between the law and justice- Eddie
doesnt do this and it plays a part in his downfall.
All the law is not in a book. Yes. In a book. There is no other law. conflict
between law and justice-what Marco thinks is just is against the law. Marco mocks
American law system.
Only God makes justice- humans make the law, but justice cant be controlled by
people, only God.
To promise not to kill is not dishonourable- Marcos idea of justice would be to kill
Eddie for what he did. Honour is just in Italian community, more conflicting law and
justice/honour.
I want my respect/ I want my name- Eddies idea of justice is for Marco to
apologise, give him his honour back- in the end his insisting on this is part of his
downfall.
You mean to tell me that theres no law that a guy which aint right can go to work
and marry a girl- Eddies idea of justice would be to get rid of Rodolfo/not let him
marry Catherine. Eddie tries to use the law to solve/help him with his personal
problems and subconscious ideas but the law cant help; it is fixed.
