Suzanna Reiss is an Associate Professor of History at UH-Manoa specializing in U.S. foreign relations,
imperialism, and capitalism. She received her MA from the University of Toronto and PhD from New
York University. Her research has focused on the political economy of US expansion, the history of
capitalism, Cold War and anti-colonial politics, and how designations of legality and criminality have
grounded the power of the modern state.
We Sell Drugs: The Alchemy of US Empire is based on the authors study of transnational geography
and political economy of the coca-leaf and coca-derived commodities market stretching from Peru
and Bolivia into the United States.
Wonder why one drug is legal and the other illegal? We Sell Drugs argues that the legal status of
any given drug is largely based on who grew, manufactured, distributed, and consumed it and not on
the qualities of the drug itself, and that drug control is a powerful tool for ordering international
trade, national economies, and societys habits and daily lives.
Suzanna will also relate her findings to contemporary events in light of the ongoing 'War on Drugs'.
