Stop Motion Animation Techniques
Interesting Materials
Year Two Using Different Methods of Animation Interesting Materials: Animation One - Armatures My Example: (Wallace & Grommet) http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=wallace+and+gromit&qs=AS&form=QBVR&pq=wallace+and+gr&sc=8- 14&sp=1&sk=#view=detail&mid=B5CCE04A3045E35F3475B5CCE04A3045E35F3475 The first method of animation I chose to analyse is armature animation. This is a method of animation that uses an inner core materiel such as wood or metal to create a structure of a figure to be later animated. The structure is usually made of various joints and connections for the figure to be tweaked and adjusted for different scenes in projects using the animation. It underlies the figure and makes an easy but effective way of allowing smooth movement for the animators. This is because the method allows simple configurations and can easily be adjusted to create any type of structure, the structure would normally have a layer of materials placed over it such as clay or putty. This can be seen in feature films and television animations, a famous example is Wallace & Grommet which popularised the idea of using this method of animation. The main benefit of using this method of animation is that it allows stiff looking objects to smoothly flow in an animation pattern, giving the subject a more detailed and in depth creation that can focus of body language and facial expressions therefore helping the audience understand the emotions being portrayed in the animation. Nevertheless this method requires a lot of patience as the animators will have to progress through each scene at a crawling pace. Each scene requires the animators to edge the armature very minutely and take a photograph each time, this is crucial in making the film appear smooth and moving fluidly. The structure is usually made of plastic or carbon based Martials for stiffness with joints connecting limbs allowing easy movability and the ability to move into certain positions, however this method is limited as there are only a small amount of actions the limbs on the figure can do and cannot flex or bend into different desired positions. Nevertheless the already made joints allow the animators to create animations with smooth looking fluid motions, this is because the object has a movable outer structure but does not include an adjustable inner core. Most figurines are painted to create realistic expressions and characters. This method of animation can be seen on television shows such as Robot Chicken witch made figurine animation mainstream, the show displayed how simple toys can be transformed into easily adjustable characters with almost unlimited creation availability. The benefit of using this animation is that the figurines can display realistic facial expressions, it gives an in depth view into the characters expressions and attitude. This example uses stickers for mouth movements and stop motion for the limbs and movement on the characters.
