Candle in the Darkness is a historical fiction book. This book
takes place in Richmond, Virginia during the time of the civil war.
This book is about a young girl named Caroline Fletcher. She lives
in Richmond Virginia with a rich family that owns slaves. Her
slaves are more family to her than her actual family is. She loved
her slaves.
When Carolines mother died she moved to Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania to live with her Aunt Martha. Caroline started to go
to meetings about abolishing slavery. The meetings inspired her to
become an abolitionist. A few years later she went back to
Richmond.
Caroline met a man named Charles. They argued about
slavery a lot. They fell in love and Charles proposed to her even
with their differences about slavery. Right after, the war broke out
and the state of Virginia seceded. Charles went to war to fight for
Caroline and the Confederates. She was scared for Charles because
he could die.

Caroline started spying for the North so the war would end
faster. She felt terrible, because she felt like a traitor. That did not
stop her from spying. Charles father found out about her spying.
She was scared. She didnt know what would happen. She thought
she was going to be killed. The war ended when the north won.
Caroline left Charles because of their differences. She started a
new life.
I liked this book because it was funny. It had a little bit of
romance and drama. I would recommend this book. I would
especially recommend it for someone who likes Historical Fiction.
