Curved Containers 2

This lab experiment measured how water levels changed in different containers (beaker, flask, cup) as volume was increased by adding test tubes of water. Students recorded water height data and graphed it to analyze the relationships. They found that the beaker maintained a steady water level, while the flask capacity increased and the cup capacity decreased with more water added. The purpose was to observe how non-uniform containers affect water levels as volume increases.

Lab # _________
Purpose- The purpose of this lab is to graph how the water in non-uniform containers changes as
volume increases.
Materials: 100 ml beaker, ruler, test tube, 600 ml beaker, 125 ml flask, cup, graph paper
Procedure1.
2.
3.
4.

Obtain 500 ml of water in a 600 ml beaker.

Submerge the test tube into the beaker & fill it with water to the top.
Empty the test tube into the 100 ml beaker.
Measure the height of the water with a metric ruler in centimeters. Record your results in
the data chart given.
5. Continue to fill and empty one test tube filled with water & measuring the water height until
the beaker is completely full
6. Continue steps 2-5 for the flask and cup.
Complete the following before you start.
1. Predict what the graphs comparing volume (number of test tubes) vs. height of water will
look like for each of the containers. DRAW in what you expect to see.

Analysis Questions1. Prepare a graph of volume (number of test tubes) vs. height of water (cm). Use one graph for
all three containers. Make each line for each container a different color.

2. Describe the relationship shown on the graph for each container.

3. Which containers filled in a steady, uniform manner and should have produced a relatively
straight line on your graph? Explain why you saw this pattern.

4. Which containers capacity to hold water decreased as the water level rises? Explain why you
saw this pattern.

5. Which containers capacity to hold water increases as the water level rises? Explain why you
saw this pattern.

*Include a conclusion paragraph*
