Regression Analysis
__________________________________________________________________
Several College Algebra sections have collected real-world data. Your job is to act as a
statistician and use the tools we have learned in this class to analyze the data provided. Please
complete the following within your groups of two. Use StatCrunch for your calculations.
1. Explain your data set. i.e., what do the variables and represent?
2. Create a Scatter Plot of your data. Describe any trends you see.
3. Calculate and provide the basic descriptive statistics for each variable. You have learned about
several descriptive statistics in the class.
4. Calculate the r correlation coefficient and determine if there is a linear correlation between the
two variables.
5. Determine the regression equation.
6. Calculate the coefficient of determination and explain what it represents.
7. Perform a residual analysis to determine if the assumptions of simple linear regression were
met.
a. Provide a Quantile-Quantile Plot.
b. Provide a Residual Plot.
c. Explain what each represents.
8. Provide a prediction using your regression equation. Remember not to extrapolate. Come up
with your own example here.
9. Discuss your results. What would you do if the assumptions in number 7 did not hold true?
This will mean that you have to do a little research!
10. Write up your results. Rather than using the traditional write-up or Power Point, I would like
you to create a website using Weebly. Your site will remain private unless you specify
otherwise. Please explain your results and consider your audience (College Algebra students).
Projects are DUE on October 10th at 5pm.
