The paper proposes a new method to identify parameters for a unified power flow controller (UPFC) to improve the transient stability of power systems with long transmission lines experiencing first swing stability problems. Various identification methods for the UPFC's series component were studied based on optimal parameters, state variables, and injection models. Finally, a new identification method is proposed using local measurements and state variables.
