COURSE SYLLABUS

2014-2015
For this year's course, we shall focus on three main curricular themes over the coming year as
outlined below.
Supplies
Textbook : Ensure it is with you each day for class. We will talk about material from it and we
will use it for ractice roblems.
!heets : "ou will receive handout and homework sheets over the year which will guide
you through your studies and aid you on your ractice roblems.
#otes : Ensure to have aer to do notes and roblems. This can be a notebook with lined
aer or a binder with sheets in it. The binder and sheets are recommended as they
are good for organi$ing work and it is good for students to be familiar with using
them in higher grades of the school.
%ther tools : &lack'blue en, encil, eraser, ruler, calculator with logarithms.
Course Outline
The course will include the following toics :
Physicl Science
Electricity!
!how, given a real world examle, that within a system, energy transforms from one form to
another (i.e., chemical, heat and electrical). We will also investigate on circuitry and how electricity
functions with aliances.
"otion!
&y investigation students will measure distance and time for a moving ob*ect and using those values
as well as the relationshi s+d't to calculate seed and grahically reresent the data.
E##ect o# $orces% &r'ity n( $riction!
Through ractical work, research data will be gathered to determine or redict the overall net effect
of multile forces (e.g friction, gravitational and magnetic) on the osition, seed, and direction of
motion of ob*ects.

Li#e Science
Bsic )ee(s o# Li'in* +hin* n( Structure n( $unction o# Or*nis,s!
!tudents will describe or comare how different organisms have mechanisms that work in a
coordinated way to obtain energy, grow, move, resond, rovide defense, enable reroduction, or
maintain internal balance (e.g. cells, tissues, organs and systems).
Clssi#iction o# Li'in* +hin*s!
!tudents will use a model, classification system, or dichotomous key to illustrate, comare, or
interret ossible relationshis among grous of organisms (e.g internal and external structures,
anatomical features).
)ee(s n( Sur'i'l o# Li'in* thin*s!
!tudents will use data and observations to make connections between, to exlain, or to *ustify how
secific cell organelles roduce'regulate what the cell needs or what a unicellular or multi, cellular
organism needs for survival.
Source o# Ener*y #or Li'in* +hin*s!
!tudents will trace the flow of energy through an ecosystem.
-nterctions ,on* Or*nis,s An( their En'iron, ent!
!tudents will describe how the environment and interactions between organisms can affect the
number of secies and the diversity of secies in an ecosystem.
Li#e Cycles.Repro(uction!
!tudents will comare and contrast sexual reroduction with asexual reroduction.
)turl Selection!
!tudents will cite examles suorting the concet that certain traits of organisms may rovide a
survival advantage in a secific environment and therefore, an increased likelihood to roduce
offsring.
Erth Science
+he At,osphere n( Cycles in Erth/s Syste,s !
!tudents will describe how matter in the atmoshere cycles through other Earth systems
.
0ether n( $ctors A##ectin* 0ether!
!tudents will exlain the role of differential heating or convection in ocean currents, winds, weather
and weather atterns, atmoshere, or climate.
Erth/s Resources!
!tudents will exlain the imortance of Earth-s resources and identify ways in which various
resources can be recycled and re, used.
+he At,osphere!
!tudents will identify ways in which the atmoshere has been altered by living systems and has
itself strongly affected living systems over the course of Earth-s history
E1peri,entl 2or3
.aboratory activities are an essential art of the science course. "ou will make observations, take
measurements, and do lab reorts.
Ac(e,ic n( Assess,ent Policies
"our grade is an assessment of your learning and academic erformance.
/01 of your grade will come from tests
231 of your grade will come from graded homework
431 of your grade will come from your articiation in class, your notes'notebook, and your
rearedness for class (31 each).
!amle roblems and ractice roblems are an imortant art of your learning and they enable you
to ac5uire and ractice skills. They will not be graded and will not figure into your final grade, but
they will hel your grade imrove (e.g. enabling you to do better in tests).
6ost or all assessments will be graded according to the scale in the student, arent handbook. 7
briefer version of this is below :
80,4001 7,, 7, or 79
:0,:81 &,, &, or &9
;0,;81 <,, <, or <9
/0,/81 =,, =, or =9
&elow /01 F
Online &r(e4oo3
7ll students and arents should have access codes to Engrade. >f you do not, lease contact me.
?rades will be ut on Engrade, so you or your arents can see your results. This will hel you to see
where you need to imrove. >f you want advice on how to imrove in any area of your work, lease
tell me.
