SSB Receiver 6

This document discusses single sideband (SSB) receivers and demodulation techniques. It describes a product demodulator that mixes the SSB signal with a crystal oscillator frequency to select the difference component, which is the desired sideband. It also discusses a diode balanced modulator that acts as a nonlinear resistance, producing sum and difference frequencies that are filtered by a transformer to extract the audio signal. The block diagram shows SSB receivers using two intermediate frequencies and filters to separately demodulate each sideband into an audio output signal.

SSB Receivers

Demodulation of SSB
Product demodulator :
Working
The SSB signal is applied to the base via a fixed frequency
IF transformer .The signal from crystal oscillator is applied
to the emitter.
The SSB signal is mixed with the crystal oscillator
frequency to generate various frequency components at the
mixer output out of which the difference component is
selected which is the required sideband. The selection of
this component is done by the RC filter. The frequency of
the crystal oscillator is decided according to the required
sideband.
Diode Balanced Modulator
The balanced modulator acts
as a nonlinear resistance and
similar to the product
demodulator sum and
difference frequencies
appear at the primary
winding of the AF
transformer T1. This
transformer will acts as low
pass filter and blocks the
radio frequencies .Thus only
audio frequencies are
obtained at the output.

Block diagram of SSB receivers
Explanation
The first IF is at 2.2 MHz whereas second is at 200KHz.
Two filters of 2.7KHz pass band one for each sideband.
The product modulator or balanced demodulates SSB.
The SSB signal is applied to audio amplifier to get audio output
signal.
Incoming signal and local oscillator signal must remain closely
synchronized in frequency to avoid distortion.
Both the local oscillators must be extremely stable.
