Contouring Lab
Contouring Lab
OBJECTIVES
To become familiar with Surpacs Gridding and Contouring tools.
To learn to grid point samples based on elevation as well as descriptive data.
To learn to create contours from resulting interpolated grids.

DISCUSSION
The Gridding & Contouring functionalit in Surpac consists of tools for importing irregularl!
collected data" regulari#ing that data" and generating contours of the resulting regular grid.
There are several uses for the Gridding & Contouring functionalit in Surpac:
$. Thinning out extremel dense data such as those from aerial surves.
%. Gridding radmonl collected data to regularl spaced grids.
&. 'ecreating contours on different contour intervals.
(. Creating contours of geochemical data.
). Creating contours of stratigraphic thic*nesses.
The following diagrams illustrate how irregular point data ma be regulari#ed b gridding:
%+$,
Figure 1: -rregular point data. This raw data ma represent collection points for soil
geochemistr or topograph.
Figure 2: The same data gridded in a regular pattern using geostatistical interpolation
methods.
.easurements in Surpac are unitless and depend entirel on the measurement sstem
used while collecting the data. For instance" elevation ma be collected in feet/ft0 or
metres /m0 so it is up to the user to be consistent when wor*ing with data from various
sources. Throughout this exercise" ou will see m+ft which means that if the raw data
data is collected in metres then a contour interval of 1% 1 means % metres. The same goes
for assa units. -f the samples are recorded in grams per tonne then a contour interval of
1)2 means ) grams per tonne.
ASSIGNMENT
$. -mport the 3geo_chem1.csv file into a Surpac string file.
%. Create a 4T. surface of 3geo_chem1.str.
&. Colour the 4T. 3geo_chem1.dtm based on Z and 5rsenic /D10 and save G-F images of
each.
(. Contour the 4T. 3geo_chem1.dtm on a % m+ft. interval and save the contours.
). Grid the Z field of 3geo_chem1.str using a &6x&6 m+ft pattern. /interpolation0
7. Contour the resulting grid from step ) using a contour interval of ) m+ft /from 6 to $660.
8. Create a 4T. surface of the contours resulting from step 7 and submit this file.
9. Grid the D1 field of 3geo_chem1.str using a &6x&6 m+ft pattern. /interpolation0
,. Contour the resulting grid from step 9 using a contour interval of ) m+ft /from 6 to $660.
$6. Create a 4T. surface of the contours resulting from step , and submit this file.
