First of all thank you very much for your messages of support
regarding our 75

We did it! As far as we know there has never been a Pakistani
fashion show so it was huge task that we had taken with
absolutely no experience but thanks to the professional models
who did excellent job with help from Maria and Rida.
The photographs are now available on our facebook page as well
as on our youtube channel PIAChannel1. We also have uploaded
the video of Pakistani and Australian National Anthems at
http://youtu.be/XfEOPnzJopw. Thanks to all who are part of this
video clip and in the event photographs.
The outcome of three grant applications is still awaited. We have
also submitted nomination for Seniors Award and are working on
Community Ambassadors nomination at the moment.
Finally now get ready for Community Barbecue on 5
th
October to
celebrate Eidul Azha in Perth and a bigger event by AFL Shaheens
in Melbourne and PAFA in Canberra.

PAKISTAN: A Cultural Showcase

The event was organised with support through Community Partnership Funding from the City of
Melville to showcase the culture of Pakistan. Among those who attended were the Mayor of the City
of Melville Hon. Audrey Russell, Hon. Margaret Quirk, Prof. Colin Roberts our Honorary Investment
Counsellor and dignitaries form WA Police, Immigration and Border Protection and leaders of
different community organisations.

The ceremony started at 7 pm with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Saif Ullah Farooqui
followed by the national anthems of Pakistan and Australia and an introduction from Dr. Zarrin
Siddiqui who thanked City of Melville to support the event. The Mayor Audrey Russell in his opening
remarks congratulated the Group to
organise the event and appraised
participants of the different initiatives
introduced by the city of Melville. He also
appreciated that PIA is also involved in
projects back in Pakistan.
The program comprises four segments
and the basic objective behind this event
was to promote understanding of the
culture hence efforts were made to
provide opportunities to experience
Pakistani music, dresses and cuisine
along with acknowledgment of community members who are Pakistani migrants or have supported
the group and Pakistani poets to render their verses.
The first segment was a fashion show to present Pakistani dresses and jewellery using the melodious
voices by Reshma, Hadiqa Kayani and Ali Zafar.

This was followed by the dance Group Bindaas Beats who prepared a beautiful medley honouring
Pakistani singers starting with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and ending with Fakhirs Tere bina. At the same
time we had Umer Sheikh, Hassan Gillani and Saad Saleem who touched the hearts of many guests.

Making us Proud Initiative:

It was last year we launched this initiative to acknowledge the members of Pakistani community who are
excelling in their fields and the ones who support Pakistani community in Australia and back home.
We had four members who were honored this year and were presented certificates by the Honorary
Investment Counsellor Mr. Colin Roberts.
Ali Raza Syed
Ali Raza Syed has excelled academically as well as in extra curricular activities and has been presented
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by the West Australian Governor Malcolm McCusker. He was the only boy
from the seven private schools in Perth-school to win the Gold Award. In his own school - Scotch College
- he is the only boy after 1966 to have earned this award. Ali Raza Syed is currently studying at the
University of Western Australia.

Sarah Imtiaz
The second nominee was awarded for leadership which is itself a difficult task and more difficult when it
is a girl who is leading the team of boys and girls. This young lady has shown exceptional qualities beside
academically strong achievement and is again a student at the University of Western Australia. The
organisation that she is leading is UWA Muslim Student Association which is playing a key role in interfaith
dialogues and promoting harmony among different cultures and religions.

Nevin Jayawardena
For last two years we are indebted with support from our friends in Australia for a lot of initiatives. There
are many team members who work behind the scene with us. One such person has worked tremendously
for the visual identity of our organisation. Whether it is a flyer for the event or the logo of Pakistanis in
Australia, a beautiful green five cornered star within seven cornered Australian one, it is all created by one
and only Nevin Jayawardena who is also currently leading the DESI group which is a group representing
students who original have linkages towards the Indo Pak subcontinent.

The Theosophical Order of Service
It was merely a coincidence when we get in touch with this organisation to sharing our experiences of
migration. It came as a surprise to know that this organisation is running schools in Karachi by the name
of Qandeel which means light to promote education in underserved communities of Pakistan. IN addition,
for our Beenai project where we collect reading glasses to be distributed in Pakistan, this organisation is
our major donor so far and only this year we have been able to send 100 pair of reading glasses to
Pakistan which will be distributed through a student run project in one of the medical colleges in Azad
Jammu Kashmir. This all has become a reality because of the support of just one organisation. Ms. Rhonda
Phillips, the President on behalf of the Theosophical Order of Service accepted the certificate.

HIC Colin Roberts congratulated the recipients and spoke about his involvement with the community.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon Margaret Quirk also congratulated the Pakistani community on
Independence day and Eid and highlighted the role of the members of the group in collaboration with
Ethnic Communities Council of WA against the proposed amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act.
The evening finally ended with performance on Dhol by Hanrishs Group on the songs by Abrarul Haq and
Fariha Pervaiz.
CONGRATULATIONS

Sami Shah launched his memoir on 29
th
August in Perth and though we could not
attend the ceremony thanks to the weather, it will be something worth
considering for a Fathers day gift perhaps.
Our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Khwaja Mohiuddin, who is nominated by
the group for Seniors Award. He has contributed immensely as a volunteer for
more than three decades. We wish him all the success. The award ceremony will
be in November.
As you read this newsletter we have also nominated a community member as
the Community Ambassador for promotion of cricket. Three expressions of
interests were received and a young emerging leader Timothy L Glovers
nomination has been accepted for his outstanding contribution towards
cricket in a multicultural context.
And finally congratulations to Miss Saira Chaudry who is studying at Charles
Sturt University and was selected to present research work for young
scientist award at I47th Annual AIFST (the Australian Institute of Food
Science and Technology) convention 2014. She presented her research
Bioactive compounds in canola meal. Canola is mainly produced for the
production of canola oil.
