Structural Analysis VCB 3013: DR Teo Wee 05-3687355

Structural analysis is the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures and their components through the application of mechanics, materials science, and mathematics. The course aims to teach students to analyze trusses, beams, frames, and complex structures using matrix stiffness methods and finite element analysis, as well as perform dynamic analysis of structures. This will allow students to compute structural deformations, internal forces, stresses, and stability in order to verify a structure's safety and inform engineering design.

What is Structural Analysis?
Structural analysis is the determination of the effects of
loads on physical structures and their components.
Structures subject to this type of analysis include all that
must withstand loads, such as buildings, bridges, vehicles,
machinery, furniture, attire, soil strata, prostheses and
biological tissue.
Structural analysis incorporates the fields of applied
mechanics, materials science and applied mathematics to
compute a structure's deformations, internal forces,
stresses, support reactions, accelerations, and stability.
The results of the analysis are used to verify a structure's
fitness for use, often saving physical tests. Structural
analysis is thus a key part of the engineering design of
structures.

Course Learning Outcome (CLO)
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
To analyze trusses, beams and frames including complex
ones using matrix stiffness method.
To perform dynamic analysis of structures.
To develop basic ideas of structural analysis using finite
element method
