This document provides questions for a student taking the Fall 2014 ME 4540/6540: Design of Machine Elements course. It asks the student about their background, including when and where they took the prerequisite ME 3060 course, their grade, key lessons learned, and definition of design. The student responds that they took ME 3060 in 2010 in India, received a grade of 90/100, learned the importance of 3D representation and understanding for design. They define design as having a vision to make things work accurately without failure. The student believes ME 3060 and 4540/6540 will broaden their perspective and technical understanding of machine element design to help tackle complex design problems in their career.

Fall 2014 ME 4540/6540: Design of Machine Elements

revised by PJ Meyer on 8/29/2014

Part 2

When did you take ME 3060 (or equivalent)? (last semester, two semesters ago, etc.)
I have taken that course in the 3
rd
year of UG in 2010.
From whom (and where) did you take ME 3060?
The course was taken from Dr. Sammaiah and it was in India. (GRIET, Hyderabad)
What was your final grade in ME 3060?
I have scored 90 marks for100 in that course and it is Grade-A.
What is the most important thing that you learned in ME 3060?
It has opened up my view of design. A total understanding is needed for a 3D representation
of any component to make it work was my best take away from that course.
What is your definition of design? (limit it to no more than two sentences)
Design is to have a vision for making anything work accurate and without vision its a
failure. The only way in which a persons creativity and capability to innovate truly comes to
use is Design.
How do you envision using ME 3060 and 4540/6540 in your career? (limit the
discussion to a paragraph)
I am very much confident that this course will mainly broaden my perspective of
understanding and increasing my technicality in the field of designing machine elements. The
successful approach in understanding any machine element not only helps with specific
products but shows the direction to tackle any given complex design situation. On a whole I
am looking positively towards learning the methods to design technically sound stuff with a
clear know-how.
