Structure For Architects Summing Up

This document provides an overview of structural principles for architects. It discusses Vitruvius's definition of architecture having strength, usefulness, and beauty. It also defines design as determining a building's appearance, materials, sizes, and configurations. The responsibilities of architects include determining size, shape, and aesthetics, while engineers determine mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. Architects are generalists trained in multiple disciplines, while engineers focus on specific technical fields like civil or structural engineering. Structural engineering designs buildings and structures to withstand loads and resist forces for stability and strength.

STRUCTURE FOR ARCHITECTS

A Primer: Ramsey Dabby; Ashwani Bedi

-our intent is to de-mystify structural principles and present them in an intuitive, easy-
to-read, and graphically friendly format.
CHAPTER 1
Architects, Engineers, and Design
Expressive definition of Architecture by
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio(1
ST
century AD Roman writer, architect , and engineer)
- De Architectura ( a Latin treatise on architecture )
- Structure(architecture) must exhibit the 3 qualities
- firmitas / strength having soundness of construction
- utilitas / usefulness having practical value of purpose
- venustas / beauty giving pleasure and delight to those who
experience it .-more difficult
-another way to define architecture is to simply call it
art and science of constructing
Design entire process of determining a bldgs. appearance, the
materials and system to be used ,and their configurations and sizes;
falls on the:
*Architects have primary responsibility for determining the bldgs
size and shape , along with the myriad archl materials, finishes and
details.
*Engineers have primary responsibility for determining the
mechanical, electrical, and structural systems, along with the many
eng calculations and details.
Contemporary architects
- Leaders; Orchestrators of most bldg projects
-Trained as generalists and humanist conversant with aesthethics,
planning, sociology, and economics, as well as engineering
Contemporary engineers
-highly technical and focused on a specific eng. discipline
2 disciplines: *Military * Civil
Structural engineering
-branch of eng. concerned w/ designimg bldgs and other types of
structures to stand up and resist loads has always been considered a
part of civil eng and remains so today.
