2 Assignment Partiipant Ver1

This document provides instructions for an assignment using the SPSS data file "3-ASSIGNMENT.sav". Students are asked to analyze relationships between variables in the data set and test hypotheses. Specifically, students should identify an outcome variable and explanatory variables, draw hypotheses about their relationships, and select variables from the data set to test the hypotheses. Students are also asked to create scatter plots analyzing relationships between years of education for married couples, relationships between respondent, mother, and father education levels, and identify an outlier case based on these education variables. The analysis should include descriptive statistics, frequencies, crosstabulations and graphs. Students will work in groups of 6 and present their findings.

ASSIGNMENT

For the assignment, SPSS data file 3-ASSIGNMENT.sav will be used. The description about the
attributes is available in the SPSS data file called 3-ASSIGNMENT.sav (total number of cases is
1,500). The description of attributes in the 3-ASSIGNMENT.sav can be found in the attached 4-
ASSIGNMENTdict.pdf. List and carried out the analysis that may be carried out on the provided
survey data, some of which may include the followings:

1. What relationship are you interested in? Identify your outcome variable and the
explanatory or independent variables.
2. What hypotheses can you draw about the relationship?
3. How will you operationalize your hypotheses? What data set will you use? Which
variables will you use from the data set to test your hypotheses?
You may also investigate the followings:
1. For the married couples in the General Social Survey, make a scatterplot of years of
husbands education (husbeduc) against years of wifes education (wifeduc). Write a
sentence describing the relationship.
2. Make a scatterplot matrix of the respondents education (educ), the respondents
mothers education (maeduc), and the respondents fathers education (paeduc).
What can you tell from the plot about the relationships of the variables? Do the
variables appear to be positively or negatively related?

3. Make a plot of educ, maeduc, and paeduc. From this plot, identify a case that is the
most extreme outlier. Identify the ages of the respondents for this outlier and
indicate them in an accompanying sentence. Indicate them inside the graph as well.

For your assignment, use Descriptive Statistics, Frequencies and Crosstabulation including the
graphs to present your analysis using the Summarizing Data method. You may also include
other statistical tests that you have used in other projects. You may also use your own data for
presentation purposes.

KINDLY WORK IN A GROUP OF 6 PEOPLE. EACH GROUP IS REQUIRED
TO PRESENT THEIR ANALYSIS DURING THE WORKSHOP
