Course Description:

The Art of Digital Photography is based upon the Visual and Performing Arts Standards and meets UC a-g
requirements. The class covers areas of the VPA Standards which strengthen and challenge students
creativity and skills in the visual arts, and places a strong emphasis on the elements and principles of art.
It is an introduction to basic concepts for acquiring digital images and the process of manipulating the
images through the use of Adobe Photoshop software. Students will analyze, research, and discuss their
own artwork, artwork of their peers, and famous artist throughout time, as well as newly emerging artist
of today. The class has also been approved and can be accepted for credits in Photo 11a at Merced
College. An assessment test, portfolio review, artist statement, and fee of $50 (can be discussed)
required for the MC credits. If you are interested in receiving credits please see me.
Course Objectives: Students will be able to
Discuss, analyze and write about the elements and principles of art found in their own works of art, historic
works of art, art in other cultures, and contemporary art.
Demonstrate proper use of the elements and principles of art through photography.
Create various works of art for commercial or personal communication using industry software Adobe
Photoshop.
Demonstrate awareness of employment opportunities in careers related to the industry.
Prepare a portfolio of artwork at the end of the year that shows commercial and personal artistic direction
and skill in digital manipulation.
Develop job readiness skills (technical reading and writing) demonstrated by completion of the
Employability Portfolio.
Student Materials:
Sketchbook or notebook
Pencils/pens
Flash drive, 4-8G (optional)
Personal camera or phone, min 6 mega pixels (optional)
Cord to camera or phone to download pictures
Classwork Includes sketches, notes, critiques (written & oral), Photoshop lessons, tests and quizzes based on
elements and principles of art, camera knowledge, safety rules, computer terms, Photoshop terms and
techniques, and ROP Portfolio showcase and interview.

Late work Students are required to make up any missed work as quickly as possible. If you are absent or know
you will be, please talk to me to work out time to complete the project. You will lose 5 points for each day the work
is late. The final cut off for any missed work is TWO WEEKS after the original due date.

Extra Credit It is offered, but may not be used in place of missing work. EC points will vary depending on the task.

The grading scale for this course will be: 90-100%=A, 80-89%=B, 60-69%=C, 0-59%=F
Project Rubric 50 points Description
Objective 10 -Did the student follow the guidelines of the
project?
Composition 10 -Composition based on Viewpoint (angle),
Background, Rule of Thirds, Division of Space
Craftsmanship 10 -How is the quality of the photo?
-Lighting based on well lit images with a full
range in values, rich colors, no flash spots
Creativity 10 -Student performed above and beyond the
BASIC guidelines
-The work demonstrates uniqueness and
originality
Photoshop Skills 10 -Student demonstrated proper use of Photoshop
skills required to complete the project

Class Rules and Procedures:
BE RESPECTFUL Treat others how you would like to be treated. Respect for yourself, other students, the
computers and your teacher is a MUST!
BE PREPARED Come to class with the necessary materials and attitude each day.
BE INVOLVED Participate in classroom discussions, groups, and activities.
BE COURTEOUS Follow all school instructions, rules, and procedures.
BE PUNCTUAL It is important to meet project deadlines on time, as well as GETTING TO CLASS ON TIME.
School tardy policy will be enforced.
BE RESPONSIBLE Computer lab rules apply in the classroom. Misuse of equipment, YouTube, social
networks, or cell phones will be dealt with severely.

Discipline steps Classroom rules have been reviewed. If a student has difficulty following the rules or
exhibits unnecessary behavior, the following steps will be taken to help the student improve behavior.
1. Verbal warning.
2. Individual conference with student and parent contact.
3. Student Incident Report and sent to Learning Center (LC).
4. Referral to Administrator

5. Severe clause The following behaviors are considered serious classroom offenses and warrant
immediate referral to LC:
1. Destroys property.
2. Misuses equipment and internet resources.
3. Refuses to do what the teacher instructs.
4. Behavior stops class.
5. Hurts another person.
