VISHNU SAHASRANAMA: AN INTRODUCTION

Vishnu Sahasranam is one of the most sacred and chanted stotra by Hindus. Recited
daily by many Vaishnavites, devotees of Lord Vishnu, Vishnu Sahasranama contains a list of
thousand name of Lord Vishnu, a premier Hindu deity (the other two in trilogy are Shiva
and Brahma). Just as Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranam is also part and parcel of
Mahabharat. It is found in the Anushasana Parva, Section 149, and verses 14 to 120. The
Sahasranama (apart from the initial and concluding prayers) has a total of 108 shlokas in
Anushtup chhanda (a meter of poetry).
In Sanskrit, 'sahasra' means 'a thousand' and 'nma' means 'name'. The compound
'Sahasranam' (or 'Sahasranama') may be translated as 'having thousand names'. Thus,
Vishnu Sahasranama literally means Lord Vishnu with thousand names or thousand names
of Lord Vishnu. In modern Hindi, it is pronounced as Sahasranm while in South Indian
languages, it is pronounced as Sahasranmam. There are Sahasranma for major forms of
God (Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti, and others), but Vishnu Sahasranma is most popular among
common people. The other Sahasranamas are recited mostly in temples or by pundit and
scholars. Vishnu Sahasranam has been subject of numerous commentaries, the most
popular being one written by Adi Shankaracharya.
It is interesting to know the history behind Vishnu Sahasranama. On the battlefield
of Kurukshetra, Bhisma - the great grandfather of Kauravas and Pandavas was lying on his
deathbed. With Bhishma's death, an era of great wisdom and knowledge was about to come
to an end. Therefore, Lord Krishna advised Yudhisthir to seek Bhishma's counsel on any and
all aspects of life. The dialogue, which was witnessed by Sage Vyasa and Lord Krishna as
well, reflects essence of Bhishma's life. During the dialogue, in response to Yudhisthir's
questions such as who is the ultimate Supreme reality of the creation; by worshipping
whom a man attains salvation; and what is the easiest way by which mankind can get
everlasting happiness, eternal peace and become free from misery and sorrow, Bhishma
mentioned thousand names of Lord Vishnu.
Recitation of God's glories eradicates evil in us and gives us a chance to reconnect
with the divine within. Sahasranam Mahatmyam aptly illustrates the Benefits of its recital:
"That man who hears or recites the names every day, never meets with any evil
either here or hereafter. If a Brahman does this he succeeds in mastering the Vedanta; if a
Kshatriya does it, he becomes always successful in battle. A Vaisya, by doing it, becomes
possessed of affluence, while a Shudra earns great happiness."
"That man who with devotion and perseverance recites these names wholeheartedly
every day, after having purified himself, succeeds in acquiring great fame, a position of
eminence among his kinsmen, enduring prosperity, and emancipation. Such a man never
meets with fear at any time, and acquires great prowess and energy. Disease never afflicts
him; splendor of complexion, strength, beauty, and accomplishments become his. The sick
become hale, the afflicted become free from their afflictions; the affrighted become freed
from fear, and he that is plunged in calamity becomes free from calamity."
"That man who with devotion and faith recites this hymn succeeds in acquiring
felicity of soul, forgiveness of disposition, prosperity, intelligence, memory, and fame.
Neither wrath, nor jealousy, nor cupidity, nor evil understanding ever appears in those men
of righteousness."

About the Author

(Aug 15th 1921 - Mar 18th 1984)

Author of more than hundred books, Mahatma Shri Yogeshwarji was a self-realized
saint, an accomplished yogi, an excellent orator and an above par spiritual poet and writer.
In a fascinating life spanning more than six decades, Shri Yogeshwarji trod the path of
spiritual attainments single handedly. He dared to dream of attaining heights of spirituality
without guidance of any embodied spiritual master and thus defied popular myths prevalent
among the seekers of spiritual path. He blazed an illuminating path for others to follow.
Born to a poor Brahmin farmer in a small village near Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Shri
Yogeshwarji lost his father at the tender age of 9. He was taken to a Hindu orphanage in
Mumbai for further studies. However, God's wish was to make him pursue a different
path. He left for Himalayas early in his youth at the age of 20 and thereafter made holy
Himalayas his abode for penance for nearly two decades. During his stay there, he came
across a number of known and unknown saints and sages. He was blessed by divine visions
of many deities and highly illumined souls like Raman Maharshi and Sai Baba of Shirdi
among others.
Yogeshwarji's experiences in spirituality were vivid, unusual and amazing. He
succeeded in scaling the highest peak of self-realization resulting in direct communication
with the Almighty. He was also blessed with extraordinary spiritual powers (siddhis)
illustrated in ancient Yogic scriptures. After achieving full grace of Mother Goddess, he
started to share the nectar for the benefit of mankind. He traveled to various parts of India
as well as abroad on spiritual mission where he received enthusiastic welcome.
He wrote more than 100 books on various subjects and explored all form of
literature. His autobiography 'Prakash Na Panthe' - much sought after by spiritual aspirants
worldwide, is translated in Hindi as well as English. A large collection of his lectures in form
of audio cassettes are also available.
For more than thirty years, Yogeshwarji kept his mother (Mataji Jyotirmayi) with him.
Yogeshwarji was known among saints of his time as Matrubhakta Mahatma. Shri
Yogeshwarji left his physical body on March 18th 1984, while delivering a lecture at
Laxminarayan Temple, Kandivali in Mumbai.
Shri Yogeshwarji left behind him a spiritual legacy in the form of Maa Sarveshwari. It
has been ages since we have come across a saint of Yogeshwarji's caliber and magnitude.
His manifestation will continue to provide divine inspiration for the generations to come.
