Place Value

Place value is a system that assigns a value to the location of digits in a number. Each digit has a place that determines its value: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. Bigger numbers can be built by combining digits in their correct places. Place value is important because it allows us to easily understand the value of multi-digit numbers based on the place of each digit. This document explains place value and provides examples of how place value determines the value of numbers using digits and place value grids.
