Metro Rail Transit
For many years, Metro manila has been experiencing the rapid growth of the vehicular population
that plagues the center of the Philippines. EDSA, a 24-kilometer stretch from MacArthur highway at
Caloocan city, north of metro manila, to Roxas Blvd., Pasay city, south of metro manila, is considered an
important capital for the lives of millions of people. The growing population and migrants that come to
metro manila is a potential commuter or car owner, which adds to the abundant cars on EDSA driving
towards their destination. The MRT was made as a solution for the growing number of cars along the
EDSA.
MRT was envisioned in the 1970s as part of the Metropolitan Manila Strategic Mass Rail Transit
Development Plan, a 16.9 kilometers line that consists of thirteen stations and started its operations in
1999.
The MRT serves nearly 600,000 passengers daily. Taking those thousands of passengers to their
destinations. This means of transportation benefits those who dont want to get caught to the frustrating
traffic along EDSA. The MRT travels in its own rail which gives the passengers relief form the stress of
traffic. The MRT also travels fast and cost less instead of consuming your money and time if you are to
get trapped in the traffic.
There are some issues about the MRTs that threaten the safety of its passengers. Issues regarding
the lack of maintenance of these MRTs have been known to public. Due to this lack of maintenance the
MRTs sometimes experiences glitches which can endanger the passengers. Although an accident has
already occurred wherein the MRT was derailed because of the glitches. Passengers of this transit has
received injuries because of this accident.
If I were to give my opinion, I would encourage those companies that own the MRTs to give
these means of transportation the maintenance it needs. There will be no more accidents if we fix those
glitches that threaten the wellbeing of our fellow passengers.
